Welcome to Hawke's Bay - Top Attractions and Local Culture

Two words that best describe Hawke's Bay, New Zealand are Wine Country - but besides wine there's a lot more to this sunny region.

Blessed with fertile soil and a warm and temperate climate, Hawke's Bay is one of New Zealand's premier wine producers, specifically red wine - cabernet sauvignon, merlot and syrah - and outstanding chardonnays. Hawke's Bay is the first stop on the Classic New Zealand Wine Trail, and a popular place to tour wine by bicycle with the region's 30+ wineries and a number of artisan food producers, linked by 200km of flat, easy bike trails.

Hawke's Bay is New Zealand's Art Deco capital, with the cities of Napier and Hastings being rebuilt in this architectural style after the devastating 1931 earthquake. Year-round guided tours and vintage cars are supercharged every February when tens of thousands of cars gather to participate in the week-long Art Deco Festival.

Notable landmarks include Cape Kidnappers, home to the world's largest inland gannet colony; Lake Waikaremoana, on which the walking track is one of New Zealand's nine Great Walks; and Te Mata Peak, with 360 degree views of Hawke's Bay and spectacular walking tracks.
