It is bounded by the Pacific Ocean to the east and the states of Victoria to the south, South Australia to the west, and Queensland to the north. New South Wales also includes Lord Howe Island, 360 miles (580 km) east of the continent. The state capital is Sydney, the country’s largest city.

Sydney, city, capital of the state of New South Wales, Australia. Located on Australia’s southeastern coast, Sydney is the country’s largest city and, with its magnificent harbor and strategic position, is one of the most important ports in the South Pacific. In the early 19th century, when it was still a small convict settlement and the first settlers had barely penetrated the interior, it had already established trade with the Pacific Islands, India, China, South Africa, and the Americas.

Sydney, above all, is a city for physical enjoyment. Several major cities in the world offer unmatched opportunities for swimming, surfing, sailing, and other outdoor sports. It's still possible to swim from some of the beaches in the harbor itself - although water pollution remains a concern - and the surf beaches to the north and south of the city are world-famous. One of them, Bondi, is a short drive from the city center. Some of the beaches north of town, especially on the Palm Beach peninsula and on Manly, are particularly beautiful. The waves are good, though varied, and made relatively safe by voluntary rescue clubs, which provide lifeguards and rescue equipment on all beaches during the summer months.

The state has numerous theaters and art galleries, most of which are located in the capital. In Sydney, the Australian Museum focuses on natural history and ethnography, the Powerhouse Museum on technological history, and the Sydney Museum in the early colonial years. There is a strong movement for historical preservation, served by the private National Trust of Australia (NSW) and by the State Heritage Council, which has great powers to prevent the demolition or alteration of buildings identified as having historical value, and many culture others.

Human remains found at Mungo indicate that Australia was inhabited about 46,000 to 50,000 years ago. Prior to European settlement, relatively dense populations of Aboriginal people lived close to the rich resources of the coast, and other groups concentrated around the major inland rivers. There are no accurate estimates of the Aboriginal population at the time of European settlement, but a figure of about 100,000 has been suggested for the area that would become New South Wales. These people lived in approximately 70 tribal or language groups.
