The Bay of Plenty region is home to spectacular beaches, juicy kiwifruit and geothermal wonders.

The Bay of Plenty, one of the sunniest places in the country, got its name when Captain James Cook dropped anchor in this great bay in 1769, after seeing how "rich the land" is. Today, not much has changed - the region is known for its delicious agricultural produce, golden coastlines and active marine volcanoes.

When James Cook arrived in 1769, he was anchored in a bay 'full of plantations and villages' which is why he records it as a 'bay of plenty.' The Bay of Plenty, New Zealand, is no less abundant today. Around Tauranga are acres of orchards and orchards that produce everything from kiwifruit and oranges to avocados. Add to this abundance local craft beers and fresh seafood in abundance and you can be sure this is the place where you will dine in delicious.

Mount Maunganui, located near Tauranga, has a spectacular beach that is a magnet for surfers all year round and was voted the best in New Zealand by TripAdvisor. For adventure lovers, there is skydiving and for those who prefer land, blokarting (small sailing boats on land) will refresh your mind.

Providing many surfing courses and beaches with the longest rolls of the left wave, the Mount - its local name - is popular with beginners, and advanced surfers alike. The white sandy beach stretches as far as the eye can see, and at its peak is the sleeping Mauao volcano.

For something more elaborate for brekkie, check out the new kid on the waterfront, Otto Eatery (51 The Strand, adjoining sister restaurant and wine bar, Oscar). There’s a smart fit-out with pale wood, sculptural chairs and cushion-strewn banquettes along with a crowd-pleasing menu. Great Coffeee too.
