With a width of no more than 50km, the entire area of the West Coast on the South Island - of which Greymouth is the largest city - has a population of only 31,000 people. It is great if you have your own vehicle, as this area is 600km long and has a lot to see. In fact, the Great Coast Road that runs from Westport to Greymouth was recently voted one of the 10 best coastal routes in the world by Lonely Planet.
The layered boulders and blowholes at Punakaiki are among the West Coast's most famous sights and a definite must-see in the region. Just a 45-minute drive from Punakaiki is the Denniston Experience, where you will travel by train into a former coal mine to witness the West Coast's fascinating mining history.
